sometimes we see a piece of theatre in which masks are used and it is clear that they have just been 'plonked' on to the actors without any work done.... hmmmmmmmm,
masks are often described as sacred objects that induce a trance-like state of possession that can endure even after the mask has been removed, and as such should be handled with extreme reverence and care and yes, we have seen several mask 'possessions', a couple of them quite alarming, and have often been 'spirited away' by the energy of a mask.
however, this can often put people off trying mask work for themselves which is a real shame as it is a wonderful, often hilarious, genuinely moving area of theatre practice. It can also be a fabulous way in when working with those 'difficult groups..... '
It's hands on practical, it's deeply satisfying, it's a lot of fun........
...and if you haven't joined us yet, here's a taster from Neutral Mask
.......'You look further down the cliff for your second foothold. It is a stretch to make it. Transfering your weight onto your first foot you transfer your other foot to your second foothold.(This is the first serious physical transition. The job is to keep your group standing up in the space. The temptation for them will be to swing the space through 90 degrees and start clambering around on all fours. Get them to resist that temptation and staying on their feet, upright, with their imaginary cliff face in front of them). With great care you move yourself down the cliff using sucessive holds until you find yourself vertical, and climbing down. Like all good climbers you keep three points of contact with the cliff at all times. You have to be careful to find the right holds for your feet and hands. The rockface is unstable. Sometimes there are places where the rock is more firm. (remember that as a facilitator at this stage, you are not encouraging your students to tell the emotional story of the journey)'.....
