WHAT'S INSIDE?
"It's a great site, loads of useful info and nice to feel connected into a working theatre community!"
Eleanor Scott Wilson, Creating Change Arts Therapy, Exeter, Devon, UK.
GAMES - ball games, circle games, name games, energiser games, imagination games, story games, rhythm games, chair games, madame giles, the game of no rules
- a growing archive of well over a hundred games ... some absolute classics, some old favourites and some new surprises (we update constantly)... we have only included games that we love - games that we have tested with many different groups and abilities...all of the games in this section can be played on many levels. If you would like a little taster of what is in this section then click on the balloons!
BODYWORK - quick warm-ups, core stability, ben's boot camp, rolling around, partnering, flight, classic trust work, eyes closed, sticks, chair stretches
- we have trained across most Dance disciplines with a major focus on contemporary dance and physical theatre techniques. We are long term practitioners of Yoga from Hatha to Astanga, and Chinese martial arts from Taiji (Chen Man Ching form) to Chow Gar........and we climb rocks and run around outside a lot! The ideas and exercises that you will find in this section contain elements of all of the above and more. We are committed to and are passionate about ongoing training and the development of the body in and for performance.
VOICE - breath, simple vocal preparation, rounds and songs easy/hard, working with text, working with shakespeare's text, received pronunciation, harmonic chant, tongue twisters
- when it comes to voice work there are many different schools of thought with regard to good practice. There are voice teachers who launch straight into scales around the piano, and others who keep you endlessly gloriously vibrating in harmonic chant without ever telling you what note to aim for. There are voice teachers who will swear that resonance exists only in the head, and there are those that insist equally strongly that resonance is in the whole body. We have worked with all of these and more! This section contains a wealth of exercises and techniques to get voices going strong, a large selection of rounds and songs, from the really simple to the really hard, effective exercises on text work and performer audience relationship.
MASK - simple mask making, more complicated mask making, the brand new mask, growing the new mask, neautral mask, character, more mask treasure...
- masks are often described as sacred objects that induce a trance-like state of possession that can endure even after the mask has been removed, and as such should be handled with extreme reverence and care and yes, we have seen several mask 'possessions', a couple of them quite alarming, and have often been 'spirited away' by the energy of a mask. However, this can often put people off trying mask work for themselves which is a real shame as it is a wonderful, often hilarious, genuinely moving area of theatre practice. It's hands on practical, it's deeply satisfying, it's a lot of fun. This section contains everything you need to get going from mask making to mask wrangling.
ELEMENTAL - attuning to site, shadow play, drawing with fire, puppets, chorus
- This is where you will find the 'non-theatre space' work.... approaches to outdoor theatre, site-specific performance and devising from site. The work in this section draws from the inspirational work of Welfare State International, the early site-specific and outdoor theatre work of Kneehigh Theatre and on and through to the Internationally acclaimed work of WILDWORKS.
